Jitendra BishtJitendra Bisht joined the PhD program in 2023. His work explores societal and institutional responses to droughts in central India and their intersections with conflict incidence during the 18th and 19th centuries. He seeks to understand past responses to climate extremes in India through the experiences and practices of agrarian communities as well as through the policies of native and colonial rulers. He comes with over half a decade of experience working on climate, agriculture, and urban policy issues in India. This involved, notably, studies on the impact of environmental degradation and climate change in urban slums, and promotion of millets for improving agriculture and nutrition outcomes in India. He has written for several institutional and media publications like the Energy Institute, the Observer Research Foundation, The Diplomat, and Down to Earth, among others. He holds an MA in Conflict Analysis and Peacebuilding from Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi and a Bachelor’s in Psychology from University of Delhi. A wannabe food historian on weekends, Jitendra can be typically found gushing over Mughlai cuisine, trekking the Himalayas, and the Delta Blues.
